Everyone, you may not know it but you are indeed witnessing history or our little part in it here in McDowell County. The Historical Society has been in existence since 1954 but yet so many have no idea that we are here and active in the community. We want to change that, in fact we want to make change all together. We want history especially our local history to become alive again. Many of your children or even grandchildren probably could not tell you who Daniel Kanipe is? We have fallen short on teaching our local history to those it matters to the most. McDowell County is a community rich in history and yet in danger of loosing its roots and heritage.
What can we do about it you may ask? Well, I for one am glad you have asked the right question... We can start by making sure that we know as much as we can about the town and community we live in. Start by asking those who would know the most about your family, your family! From there you can explore the many historical places in McDowell as well as become a member of the Historical Society and help us save and preserve our history for our future generations. History is all around us, you just have to look to see it.
This website as well as the Facebook page has been a huge undertaking for the many volunteers who have given so freely of their time so take some time to look around and let us know what you think. Oh and for those who may be asking themselves, "Just who is Daniel Kanipe?" http://www.mohicanpress.com/battles/ba04004.html
