WELCOME to the McDowell County Historical Society. Our organization was
created under the auspices of three sisters, Mary, Ruth, and Nina Greenlee. They
were all educators and lovers of the history of their ancestral home of McDowell
County. We are a group composed of like-minded individuals with an avid interest
in preserving the area’s history and its culture.
We welcome you to join us here on our website and on Facebook. Once Covid-19
concerns abate, stay-tuned to these sites for information on when we will
continue with our “Fourth Thursday” monthly educational programs. The
professionals, (historians, authors, geologists, genealogists, archaeologists to
name a few), who present these programs are always interesting. We invite all to
come participate and partake of these free programs and benefit in their
knowledge of our region’s past.
The McDowell Historical Society also holds special community events and
fundraisers. For more information on these go to our calendar here or on
Facebook, as Covid-19 concerns may change our plans once again.
We wish to thank the NC Humanities for their support of our organization that
enables us to continue sharing the vast and varied history of our region with the
community.
